The Plot: Based on Repatriation
Uzma Ahmed (Sadia Khateeb) travels to Malaysia in search of a job and meets Tahir (Jagjeet Sandhu). Somehow Uzma gets convinced to marry Tahir and travels to Pakistan through Wagah border. Tahir receives her and takes her to his home in Buner. In the current timeline of the film, Uzma is in the Indian embassy seeking refuge and explains how she got trapped to JP Singh (John Abraham). This side of the story is narrated by Uzma but JP Singh somehow does not find the story convincing initially, just like other Pakistani officials and want to explore different versions. There is a focus on constant interrogation, courtroom drama, some chasing sequences which lead to the repatriation of Uzma Ahmed, the Indian citizen who was kidnapped, as per her.
The first-rate performances
The Diplomat Cast is successful in delivering knock out performances. John Abraham as J.P Singh is effective. His way of showing aggression without flexing any muscle is the admirable aspect of his performance. Sadia Khateeb as Uzma Ahmed is convincing. In fact, she excels in most parts and in every stage whether it’s being vulnerable or showing anger, she nails every bit. Jagjeet Sandhu as Tahir is the winner among all The Diplomat (2025) actors. He is the most convincing with slick dialogue delivery. Jagjeet excels in almost every frame that he appears in and is very impactful. He definitely leaves a mark and improves the overall output of the film. There are other actors like Kumud Mishra, Revathy, Sharib Hashmi, Ashwath Bhatt and others, and all of them are phenomenal in their respective roles.
The Technical Stuff
The Diplomat John Abraham Movie boasts of a strong background score by Ishaan Chhaabra. The background music adds a lot to the thrills making the scenes more serious. The cinematography is also excellent, Dimo Popov has done a stellar job. Even though the writing by Ritesh Shah is good, it could have been better considering the disclaimer that says that a lot of things have been altered. So the cinematic liberty could have been used to enhance the entertainment aspect of the film. The music is decent but this kind of a film seldom has any HIT music. The marketing of the film failed to create a lot of buzz but the assets or the units were true to the film which means the film was exactly on the lines of what was promised.
Why not 4 stars and only 3.5 ?
The Diplomat was a clear 4 star film but a few things made that half star go away. No backstory for Uzma Ahmed. This is one crucial point because the viewers get more emotional and attached when the family is shown and if Uzma’s attachment with the family was shown. The emotional angle of her being away from the family just doesn’t come out. Also, what was happening to her daughter while she was kidnapped, is also not addressed in the film. Inserting these portions would have established more connect with Uzma and the emotions would have been more impactful and the audience would have shed tears. That did not happen because the writing did not have any such scope. There are a few scenes that have rapid pace and this hampers the output. The climax could have been a lot better. The impact got diluted in a few places. Nevertheless, the film does not disappoint.
Box Office Opening Note
The film opened with Rs 4 crore nett in India due to the Holi holiday. It is a low number but then due to no awareness only Rs 1.50 crore to Rs 2 crore range was expected. But the film gathered momentum post 5pm. Chhaava remained the first choice of cinegoers. The film can close as a subject as the reception is positive. The film opened with $5K in Australia, $7K in Canada, $3.5K in New Zealand, $7.5K in UK and $33K in USA. The simplify things, the opening is bad but because there were no expectations at all, the numbers look decent.
