Kangana Ranaut is known for her phenomenal acting and Emergency proves that yet again. But this time, she’s also on the director’s chair.

Film’s Plot: Based on True Events

The Emergency Movie Team has been successful in their research and have picked events that are true. The film is formed into a drama where these events have been discussed. The history buffs will have a lot of things to discuss, verify and debate on. The film starts off with Indira Gandhi’s childhood days and covers major events till her unfortunate demise. The key focus is on the Emergency imposition between 1975 to 1977: what led to it and what it changed, that’s mostly what the film talks about. It also talks about her son Sanjay Gandhi. Emergency Hindi Movie Review

The Performances are Convincing but

Emergency Movie cast is led by Kangana Ranaut who plays Indira Gandhi and she is terrific in her role. Her expressions, voice modulation and dialogue delivery and everything else about her just stand out. The outbursts, the confrontation and the emotional pieces, she nails every bit and the rating of the film is heavily influenced by her performance.
Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan does a fine job. The writing limits his scope as a performer but even then, he shines. Shreyas Talpade lends decent support. Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw definitely leaves a striking impact. I strongly feel he deserved more screen-time. Fabulous screen presence. Satish Kaushik and others have done good work. Vishak Nair is impactful and has his moments in the movie.
On the whole, the cast of Emergency Movie does good work but the writing of the film does not extract their best or unleash the true potential barring the performance of Kangana Ranaut.

The Sharp Technical Aspects

The film enjoys a terrific background score. In fact, the one-liners, the punches work because of the impactful BGM. The music elevates the impact of important scenes. Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara have showcased solid work and their work deserves appreciation. The songs could have been a lot better but the film would’ve been okayish even without the songs, no value added.
Tetsuo Nagata’s cinematography also is commendable as it makes the scenes and the watching experience more thrilling. The production values are also good and the authentic setting is a plus. The setting includes not only the world building but also the look of every character, their costumes etc.

Emergency Movie Cast

Due to censorship issues, certain scenes don’t come across well and the impact gets diluted. Also few scenes are stretched which makes it some what boring. There are scenes where the outcome is shown pretty soon and hence you don’t feel much. The events shown in the film are authentic and can be verified by anyone. The sound design of Emergency also is done well.

What could have been better?

Trimming of a few unnecessary scenes in the film what go in its favour. The pace is very rapid in certain scenes. It starts and ends abruptly. The climax of the film could have been a lot better. The pre-finale and the finale both were very abrupt. Few scenes deviate from the main topic. There is a constant focus on the politicians and not on the lives of the citizens during the period. The family drama in the homes of the citizens and their perspective to the political scenario would have made the film much more entertaining and gripping. Few scenes where the emotions had to work required longer episodes but the film gave more screentime to the episodes that were irrelevant or least interesting.

Opening Note at the Box Office

The opening of the film is weak with Rs 2.35 crore nett as estimates. PVR and Inox chain collected Rs 1.03 crore nett where as Cinepolis collected Rs 22 lakh nett taking the national chains total to Rs 1.25 crore nett. The film had dull opening in overseas markets too with Australia collecting $5.8K from 20 screens, New Zealand $1.28K from 8 screens and UK managed only $8K from 48 theatres. The opening is disaster but due to decent to good word of mouth, film may show some legs in India. The film opened with these numbers having special Rs 99/- ticket pricing across major theatres.
